A range of training courses are available relating to 4x4 and trailer operation including:

4x4 Professional Off Road Driving
Course Objectives
To enable course members to:
- Be able to carry out a risk assessment
- Understand the main principles of driving off-road
- Recognise the safe working environment for off-road vehicles on typical ground surface conditions
- Be able to assess the suitability of any ground/route, before attempting to drive over it
- Prepare and perform the necessary checks to ensure the safety of a vehicle off-road and on-road
- Safely operate a vehicle in an off-road situation with a variety of typical ground surface conditions (slopes, Mud, obstacles, water)
- Have an understanding of the dangers of vehicle recovery
Who is the Course For?
Any person who is/will be required to operate a 4X4 vehicle in an off-road environment. All trainees must be able to demonstrate that they are competent in driving normal vehicles in a road situation and hold a current driving licence. An individual assessment will be carried out and those reaching the required standard will receive the nationally recognised certificate.
Duration/Format
Two days (including evening session)
NVQ/SVQ Linkage
This course contributes towards Agriculture and Commercial Horticulture 1ACH8100, and Assisting in Road Haulage and Distribution Operations' NVQ Level 1 Unit 7.
4x4 Professional Off Road Driving Corrective (Code CLVF04X)
Course Objectives
To enable course members to:
- Be able to carry out a risk assessment
- understand the main principles of driving off-road
- recognise the safe working environment for off-road vehicles on typical ground surface conditions
- be able to assess the suitability of any ground/route, before attempting to drive over it
- prepare and perform the necessary checks to ensure the safety of a vehicle off-road and on-road
- safely operate a vehicle in an off-road situation with a variety of typical ground surface conditions (slopes, mud, obstacles, water)
- have an understanding of the dangers of vehicle recovery
Who is the Course For?
Highly experienced 4X4 drivers who require a nationally recognised certificate as evidence of skills and knowledge. An individual assessment will be carried out and those reaching the required standard will receive the nationally recognised certificate.

One day (classroom and practical)

Basic Trailer Handling (Code CLVF06X)
Course Objectives
To enable course members to :
- Understand the requirements of the Risk Assessment
- Understand the legal requirements for towing trailers on/off the road either at work or privately
- Appreciate the main causes of accidents and what can be done to avoid them
- Gain knowledge of the different types of hitches in use, and what contributes to an ideal towing combination
- Couple/un-couple a trailer safety and in line with the recommended DSA test method
- Carry out all necessary checks prior to taking the unit onto the public highway
- drive with a trailer
- through a restricted entrance
- round 90º turns
- across the DSA test layout
- stop the unit safety within a given distance
Who is the Course For?
- Those wishing to update their skills in trailer handling and/or satisfy H & S legislation regarding the Safe Use of Trailers at work
- Anyone required to take the trailer test for towing on the road
- Anyone needing to tow trailers off-road as part of their work
Pre-requisites
A full driving licence (not provisional) with B entitlement.
Duration/Format
1 day, with option to carry on and take off-road element (1 day) and/or on-road element (1 day).
Health and Safety and Risk Management in Winching (Code CLVW01X)
Course Objectives To enable course members to:
- Identify Health & Safety requirements and be able to carry out a risk assessment before using a vehicle mounted or hand operated winch and associated equipment.
- Recognise and understand safe working practices for winching.
- Prepare for and carry out the recovery of a vehicle in an off road situation or moving of an object from point A to point B safely including correct use of associated equipment and snatch blocks
Who is the Course For?
Any person who is or will be required to operate a hand or mechanical winch on or off the road. An individual assessment will be carried out and those reaching the required standard will receive the nationally recognised certificate.

Off Road Trailer Handling (Code CLVF08X)
Course Objectives
Following this course, trainees will understand ;-
- The legal requirements for towing off-road at work
- The practical limitations of the towing vehicle
- How to assess the risks involved
- The need for thorough vehicle checks
- The techniques required to tow safely off-road
Who is the Course For?
- Those wishing to update their skills in trailer handling and/or satisfy H & S legislation regarding the Safe Use of Trailers at work
- Anyone needing to tow trailers off-road as part of their work
Pre-requisites
Trainees must have competed Day 1, hold a full driving licence and a 4x4 Professional Off-Road Driving Certificate or equivalent.
